Coffee - african or south american?

Coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans,  it is the most popular drink worldwide with around two billion cups consumed every day. Luckily for the coffee industry, 75% of coffee drinkers say the pandemic has not changed their coffee consumption. Coffee is the second-most traded commodity in the world, behind only petroleum.

Coffee can trace its heritage back centuries to the ancient coffee forests on the Ethiopian plateau. The story goes that a shepherd discovered coffee after he noticed that after eating the berries from a certain tree, his goats became so energetic that they did not want to sleep at night.

Coffee was first introduced to Europe when the Turks invaded Hungary at the Battle of Mohács in 1526. Within a year, coffee had reached Vienna.

So the origin of coffee is African, coffee's roots in South America reach to the early 18th century, when European colonists introduced seeds into Suriname and French Guiana, then Brazil. Cultivation then spread to the continent's northern countries. Today coffee is one of South America's most famous exports and the continent produces the majority of coffee consumed globally.

There are two different types of coffee beans that grow in South America and both flourish in different conditions.
  • Arabica beans which are the most widely consumed, grow best in humid climates between 1200-1800 metres above sea level.
  • Robusta beans flourish at sea level and up to 750 m high.

The top countries producers today are: Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Honduras, India, Uganda, Mexico, Peru. 

Revenue in the retail rarket for coffee industry decreased 6.9% in 2020. Industry revenue is expected to rebound over the five years to 2026 as coffee retailers reopen and increase customer capacity as the pandemic subsides. As per the survey conducted by the National Coffee Association in the United States, more than 70% of the consumers prefer at-home coffee preparation. In moderation, coffee seems to be good for most people, coffee is associated with a lower risk of mortality and lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. People can develop a dependence on coffee and other caffeinated beverages quite quickly, so moderation is key.

So why do people drink coffee? Since coffee contains caffeine, this beverage can help people feel less tired, increase energy levels, burn fat by jump-starting the body's metabolism, and improve productivity and brain function—including memory, mood, reaction times, and general mental function. And of course the taste is so special and it smells just wonderful.
