The origin of the lemon is unknown, though lemons are thought to have first grown in Assam (a region in northeast India), northern Burma or China. A genomic study of the lemon indicated it was a hybrid between bitter orange (sour orange) and citron.

The time from flowering to harvest is contingent on a host of conditions, but generally takes anywhere from four months to one year. Flowers most commonly appear in spring, the fruit develops over summer, and then slowly turns from green to yellow in fall or winter.
